Greg was 15 minutes from the end of his day, and he was thanking Merlin for it. Two dragons raised in captivity and abused for years were his last case of the day. The wizard had been arrested, the animals taken to a rehabilitative care and now he was finishing up his paperwork on the case and an incident report for the nasty bite he'd gotten. He was ready to go home.

Krista would be waiting, and if he timed it just right, Andy would be waking up from his afternoon nap. Nothing in the world was like coming home to a still-sleepy-and-content baby and said baby's precious and breathtaking mother.

He counted down the last two minutes to 4, clocking out and walking out to the apparation point. He apparated home and unlocked the door, calling out softly as he made his way into the living room.

There was something about watching a child learn to walk that was particularly amazing. That slow determination that took hold of Andy, the way he crawled to the couch and pulled himself up with a small frown on his face, the way he would turn to take one tiny movement with his foot and fall, over and over. He didn't cry, simply started over again, this slow process of up, fall, sit, get more determined and try again.

There was something special about the way Krista felt in his arms as they watched the baby carefully. The way they were comfortable with each other now. The way her hand fit in his. The way his chin fit in the space where her neck met her shoulder just so. They were both fixated on the baby, watching him carefully, but still loving on each other, almost without a thought about it. Hands touched, bodies curled up together, even without focusing on themselves.

Andy fell again and this time he did cry, frustration apparent on his face. Krista hopped up and held her arms out for him, picking him up and settling him on her hip, then turning to Greg with a grin. "Come on, Andy, let's walk to Dad," she said, swinging him around and setting him up on his feet again, her hands holding his for support.

"Da!" Andy said happily, his legs moving almost too fast, his body wobbling even with the extra help. "DA!" he said again, the tears still sparkling on his cheeks but the world's cheesiest 3-toothed grin ever on his face. "Mum mum mum... DA!"

Greg grinned and leaned forward, reaching his hands out. "Come see Dad," he said, the word still foreign on his tongue, the heady feeling when he said it just as unusual, but not at all unwelcome. "Come on, Andy-baby."

"I'm going to let him go," Krista said, only a half-step between them.

"Okay," Greg murmured,leaning forward a little more, poised to catch the baby's hands, but one wobbly step sent Andy directly into his arms and he laughed, scooping him up and kissing his cheeks.

Amazing.

Greg had a thing about protecting his family. It wasn't just that Krista had been through so much (though, that did cause some of it, of course), nor was it that Andy was so tiny (which... he was), but it was the sheer fact that they were his.

In an entirely not possessive, scary, creepy way, that is.

When they had packed everything up, he shrunk the bags of things and lifted the diaper bag onto his shoulder, turning to Krista with a smile. "Ready to apparate?" he asked, dipping his head to kiss her softly. "Do you think Andy's ready for his first time apparating?" That was his only nervousness. He didn't want Andy to be uncomfortable.

They were heading home.
